LATAKIA, Syria – More than 1,000 women and children have fled Turkish operations in Afrin to seek shelter, said Yuri Evtushenko, head of the Russian Centre for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in the Syrian Arab Republic during a briefing from the Khmeimim airbase on Sunday.
The operation began by Turkey and its proxies to remove the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the northwest Syrian canton of Afrin.
Ankara considers the YPG as a terrorist organization as it is the Syrian branch of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that the US also considers as a terrorist organization, despite funding, arming and supporting the YPG.
To help in the fight against the YPG, the Turkish military have recruited the likes of Al-Zinki, a terrorist organization who in 2016 beheaded a child. Full details of this can be read here.
