Spain deployed 250 soldiers on Sunday to help rescue hundreds of drivers who were trapped overnight in vehicles as heavy snowfall cut off several roads. Two companies of specialist soldiers and 95 vehicles were sent to free hundreds of cars stranded on the AP6 highway linking Madrid and the northwestern city of Segovia. The rough weather comes as many Spaniards are travelling home after the end of the Christmas holidays. Meanwhile, heavy snow has cut off the Alpine ski resorts of Cervinia in Italy and Adelboden in Switzerland, as stormy weather continues to batter Europe.

Some travelers are being trapped since Saturday night… Can you imagine that? Soldiers and firefighters used snowplows to try to clear the snow, and distributed blankets and hot drinks to motorists. But what do you do when you run out of gas? How do you stay warm?


About 1,000 vehicles were still trapped on Sunday. Some cars have already run out of gas. Sara Ramos, who was stranded overnight with her husband and two children aged two and six, said she had not eaten since lunchtime on Saturday.


Spain’s weather office issued alerts for 37 provinces on Sunday because of the risk from heavy snow, strong winds and rain.
Meanwhile Italy is being swept by a powerful blizzard bringing huge amount of snow in Aosta. Here’s a video captured in the Valle d’ Aostaat an altitude of 2600m on the 4th January:
