President Trump has blamed the ‘war zone’ Chicago weekend that saw 12 people shot dead and 59 injured on Rahm Emanuel’s lack of leadership as calls mounted on the embattled mayor to step down.
Illinois governor Bruce Rauner branded Emanuel ‘corrupt’ and ‘part of the problem in Chicago’ during an interview with a downstate radio station on Thursday. ‘He’s got to go,’ the Republican said.
Emanuel also faced calls to resign from Chance the Rapper and prominent Chicago pastor Reverend Gregory Livingstone, while continuing to be the target of barbs from fellow Democrat and mayoral candidate Garry McCarthy.
President Trump added his voice to criticism of the mayor at a Thursday meeting on prison reform, during which he blamed ‘bad leadership’ for the violence.
‘We must strengthen community bonds with law enforcement, including cities like Chicago that have been an absolute and total disaster,’ he said.
‘That’s bad stuff happening. And probably, I guess, you have to take it from the leadership, it’s called bad leadership.’
His comments followed a verbal barrage directed at Emanuel from Governor Rauner.
‘He’s corrupt. He’s part of the problem in Chicago,’ he said in the radio interview. ‘Failure on jobs. Failure on taxes. He’s got to go.’
A mayoral spokesman told ABC the broadside was ‘high praise from the man named the worst governor in America’ and claimed Trump was ‘bothered’ by the Robert Mueller investigation.
