Stay or flee? Energy reserves influence the predator-prey relationship

Signal Detection Theory is a popular and well-established idea that has influenced behavioral science for around 50 years. Essentially, the theory holds that in a predator-prey relationship, prey animals will show more wariness and be more prone to flee as predators become more common. Danger signals are ambiguous, so in what appears to be a threatening situation, animals are better off running than hanging around to see if a predator really does strike.

Now Pete Trimmer, a postdoctoral research at UC Davis, has taken a fresh look at signal detection theory and come up with what at first look like counterintuitive results. In many cases, he says, animals should actually become less cautious as the risk of predation rises.

The problem with conventional signal detection theory, Trimmer says, is that it only considers one decision at a time, in isolation. But in reality, animals may have to make multiple connected decisions and have to take into account the effects of decisions over time.

Trimmer, graduate student Sean Ehlman and Professor Andy Sih at UC Davis, with mathematician John McNamara at the University of Bristol, U.K. developed a new model that they call state-dependent detection theory or SDDT. The work is published Oct. 18 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

National Front neo-Nazi comes out as gay Jew, quits movement

A prominent neo-Nazi and National Front organizer has come out as gay and revealed his Jewish heritage. He made the revelations about his violent past while renouncing far-right extremism.

Kevin Wilshaw, 58, spent his entire adult life promoting white supremacism and was a high-profile figure in the National Front (NF) in the 1980s. He was still speaking at extremist events as recently as this year and was arrested for spewing race hate online in March.

Speaking to Channel 4 News, he admitted to acts of violence and racism including smashing a chair over someone's head in Leeds and vandalizing a mosque in Aylesbury. He said he joined "because he didn't have many friends at school," and was looking for "comradeship" and to be "a member of a group of people that had an aim."

"Even though you end up being a group of people that through their own extreme views are cut off from society, you do have a sense of comradeship in that you're a member of a group that's being attacked by other people," he added.

From Las Vegas to Iran: Zionists running the show - can they be stopped?

The purpose of Grand Strategy is to assure peace and prosperity for the Nation-State - to avoid war, to prevent all possible threats from emerging, to balance all policies and their costs in an affordable, balanced, flexible, and sustainable manner. [1]

The USA does not have a grand strategy --- and none of its leaders seem to understand this is suicidal.

The graphic below illustrates a three-dimensional approach to Grand Strategy, one that integrates the ten high-level threats to humanity generally and the USA specifically; [2] the twelve core policies that must be orchestrated in a Whole of Government manner on a foundation of holistic analytics and true cost economics; [3] and the major players in the world that the USA must respect if it is to achieve peace and prosperity. The red dots are where the entire US secret intelligence community (IC) focuses, and in both of these - inter-state conflict and terrorism - it is the USA that the primary antagonist pursuing elective wars not authorized by the Congress, [4] and sponsoring terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), this particular one in partnership with Israel and Saudi Arabia. Reporter Sharon Waxman finds witnesses backing claim that NYT killed 2004 story exposing Weinstein's sexual predations

TheWrap's Sharon Waxman has found witnesses to back up her claim that the left-wing New York Times killed a 2004 story that exposed producer Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual predations.

Just hours after the Weinstein scandal went nuclear earlier this month, Waxman revealed that way back in 2004, while working as a reporter for the Times, she nailed down a story about how Fabrizio Lombardo, the head of Miramax in London, had zero film experience and that his real job was to procure women for Weinstein.

According to Waxman, she had on the record sources ready to confirm "evenings [Fabrizio] organized with Russian escorts." Moreover, Waxman says she "tracked down a woman in London who had been paid off after an unwanted sexual encounter with Weinstein."

Waxman claims that after intense pressure from Matt Damon, Russell Crowe, and a personal visit from Weinstein, "The story was stripped of any reference to sexual favors or coercion and buried on the inside of the Culture section."
